Unfortunately, Ike seemed to lack enthusiasm and could have "phoned in"
his performance. Ike didn't crack a friendly face until after the 20
minute "break" and then he actually cracked a smile.... once.
That's too bad. I saw them the previous night in Cleveland, and Ike was
in fine form.
To his credit, his vocals were fine as usual and his guitar playing
seemed faster and cleaner than I remembered.
I agree with that. One problem I've had with Ike's playing at past P/O
shows is his tone. He uses a Roland Jazz Chorus amp and his tone with
all the chorus on it has been way too mushy and blurry sounding. Maybe
it sounds good to him, but it sounds like ass out in the audience. His
tone was a bit sharper and clearer last night (but there's still room
for improvement.) I also think Andre was playing a bit better than he
had been some of the other times I'd seen them. And Seahag, well.. what
can you say about Seahag? :D
The keyboard player, Eric Svalgard (Keys, vocals) featured aTheramin(?)
and used it to good effect during a solo. His keyboard playing was very
fast, clean and listenable, unfortunately he seemed unable to keep the
rhythm during several numbers, but then again, he is a young guy
attempting to play exactly like George Duke, Tommy Mars, Bobby Martin,
Allan Zavod, etc. tough shoes to fill.
I've seen P/O with Svalgard 5 times, and there have been many instances
where I've cringed at his trying to play some of the fast, complicated
stuff. Perhaps I shouldn't be so critical, I mean, I can't play
keyboards *at all*. Either way, his playing of the tricky composed stuff
has *definitely* improved. His playing on "Inca Roads" was the best
I've heard from him on that particular song (one which I've felt he
downright butchered at one other show, and stumbled through at others.)
His synth soloing seems to have lost a little of it's wild, out-there
qualities, on the other hand.
I have seen PO 4 times now and enjoy their work. I must say this was
the weekest performance I have seen. They had a real hard time, in
fact, almost painfully so, trying to do many of the vocals exactly as
in the original songs. rather than try to be a Lancilotti, Bozzio or
Beefheart, they should have tried a lower register.
I thought there were pretty damn good vocally the other night. The weak
link, however, is Andre when he sings lead. He only sang lead on one
tune, "I Have Been in You", and he just wasn't cutting it. He's great
contributing to group vocals, though.

mWo. It's not just the coolest, it's fa lyfe, so survey says

Was it a real Theremin (played by waving your hands in the air) or one
of the Beach Boys kind that you actually touch?
The real kind.

He stumbled a bit, but was generally enjoyable. He's new, right?
He's been with them since 2004, I think.
I
don't recall seeing a Theramin
It was the box with the antenna on it in front of the Moog.
but he did have *something* marked
"Moog" (please excuse my equipment ignorance)
A Moog synthesizer.
that had a tendency to
sound EXACTLY like That Instrument from "I Promise Not To Come In Your
Mouth."
A Moog synthesizer. :)
This was my first time seeing PO's new rhythm section, and I was
mostly impressed. Their prior drummer was more, IIRC, in the "Chester"
mode, while this new guy was Bozzio all the way, right down to riding
on the cymbal. He also had Logeman's parts (from the Society Pages
mini-suite) down pat.
The first time I saw P/O without Glenn, I was sort of worried what the
drumming was going to be like, because new guy has such a small kit
(snare, hi-hat, crash, ride/crash, rack tom, floor tom, bass drum)
compared to Glenn's. He's a great and very enthusiastic drummer, though
I do feel his playing could grow a bit and be a little more varied if he
had a few more toms and cymbals at his disposal. He *was* playing with a
rack of 3 Rototoms on this tour, though, which he didn't have last year.

D'oh. I have no idea how I missed that yesterday...I guess I must've
been standing at the perfectly wrong angle.

FWIW, Vinnie's fall '78 kit wasn't much bigger. I think he had at
least two rack toms, though.

Because as we all know, a drummer without a giant

Well I saw 'em in late 2003, and he was there. Mainly I remember him
murdering the synth lines before the gtr solo in Inca roads.
Same here (and not just the part before the solo, either). I think after
three tours, he's pretty much got it down, though. Like I said in
another post, I really shouldn't talk shit about his performances too
bad, because I can't really play keyboards at all, but his performances
on that song produced many-a-cringe for me.

You're not asking people to pay to hear you play, though.
